Kiki Shepard’s 13th annual Celebrity Bowling Challenge to benefit her K.I.S. Foundation is this Saturday night in Studio City. You probably know Kiki as the ”Vanna White” of Showtime At the Apollo. She is an actor, dancer and Broadway performer who also happens to carry the Sickle Cell trait. Its why she started her foundation to educate and promote awareness. She stopped by our studios this morning to talk about the event this Saturday and to share some things she wants us all to know about Sickle Cell.
Overtime with KiKi Shepard:
Kiki shared her very personal story of how she found out that she carried the trait and how it inspired her years later to start her foundation. She feels blessed for all the successes she has had and sees this as her way to give back. She’s been doing the Bowling Challenge for 13 years now and it has become a popular event that draws a large array of entertainers.
Kiki explained how Sickle Cell Anemia affects the people who have the trait. It can affect every organ in the body because it decreases the amount of oxygen in your blood stream. Oxygen is essential for organ functioning. Kiki’s foundation has a number of programs they support including their Catch up Tutorial Program to help kids affected by Sickle Cell to keep up with their classes when they are sick and a backpack starter kit for families dealing with the disorder.
Kiki is grateful for her sponsors who come back year after year to help. They include her title sponsor UPS, US Bank, Xerox, Mercedes Benz of Beverly Hills, Rocky Carroll and Charles Johnson of NCIS, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr of Gray’s Anatomy, The Retirement Choices of California, former Green Bay Packers player and Dancing with the Stars Champion Donald Driver and Wells Fargo. Kiki is doing a great job of getting younger members of the Hollywood community involved as well.
Kiki also appreciates the volunteers and others who help her to see her mission through, including all of us here at the Wave and her Director of Operations, Latonia Robinson, who has been with Kiki for the whole thirteen years she’s been doing the Bowling Challenge. Kiki says to bring your A-Game because her celebrity friends are serious about bowling. We hope to see you there.
