The Regalettes not only know how to throw a party; they also know how to raise money for scholarships. That’s the point of their popular Afternoon In White.
It’s the legendary LA social and civic club’s annual scholarship fundraiser and it’s happening on Sunday August 21st at the Skirball Cultural Center. I spoke to event co-chairs Lois Buckman and Shirley Franklin about the organization, the event and the wonderful young people they’ve been assisting with their college tuition.
Lois and Shirley told me all about the history of the Regalettes and how they were founded by Gertrude Gibson, legendary entertainment journalist for the LA Sentinel. For many years now, the group has been supporting the arts and helping college students go to school.
The Whispers will be performing at this year’s gala. They had a long time friendship with Gertrude Gibson. She was involved with their career early on and helped them identify many opportunities on their way up. The honorees this year are well known contributors to the LA community. Daryl Brown from US Bank will receive the President’s award, Dr. Clark E. Parker and Dr. Jeanette Parker, founders of Today’s Fresh Start Charter School and Golden Day Schools, will be presented with the Founder’s Award and the Community Service Award goes to a mother and daughter who are owners of several McDonald’s Restaurants, Patricia Williams and Nicole Enearu.
The real stars of this event are the scholarship recipients. They are amazing young people and the Regalettes help them get ready to compete and achieve their goals. The students have to maintain their grades and do community service and if they meet all of the requirements, they receive their annual scholarships for as long as they are in school. To apply for the scholarships, go to http://www.Regalettes.org. The application is on their website.
They’re doing something different this year at the gala. It’s called Give By Cell, where patrons use their cell phones to donate to the scholarship fund. Aside from the money, these students need help along the way so the Regalettes not only give them checks, they also help the students and their families make the adjustments that go along with higher education.
All in all it’s a party for a very good cause. We hope you’ll join us. I’ll be hosting this year’s event.
