Byron Scott Talks Basketball Camp, Future Projects and More

Byron Scott is a three time NBA Champion with the Show Time Lakers and a former head coach for the Nets, Hornets, Cavaliers and most recently the Lakers.

With all of the traveling around he has done, he has always remained committed to the LA community and every summer he puts on a summer basketball camp in our area. This year is no exception. Byron stopped by the station to talk about the camp, this year’s crazy free agency season, the amazing LA Sparks and a lot more.

Byron says he was lucky to grow up in a two parent household with a terrific support system but not every child has that situation. His camp is designed to not only teach basketball skills; Byron wants the campers to learn life skills too as they gain confidence just by being there and participating. He is at the camp everyday all day and wants the kids to know he is accessible and approachable. He does it in Fullerton, because he says a lot of these kids have never even been to Orange County and he wants to expand their horizons.

At the camp, the kids will do a lot of basketball drills to improve their skills. I like the fact that girls are included. Byron says that about a third of the campers are girls and that last year his three best campers were girls. On the subject of girls in basketball, Byron agrees with me that people should be talking more about the LA Sparks, who are on track to match or beat the record for most wins in a WNBA season. We discussed all the recent free agent signings in the NBA and the controversial acquisition of Kevin Durant by the Golden State Warriors.

We talked about playing in Europe as a viable new option for talented ball players who didn’t get drafted by the NBA. Playing overseas is a great alternate choice that gives them a chance to play and to see the world at the same time. Byron says European players are great at the fundamental so there’s a lot to learn from them. Players can make money and if they really perform well, sometimes they get noticed and get a chance to play here at home in the league. Byron spent time at the end of his playing career in Greece. He believes that travel like this expands your horizons. It was a great experience for his kids too.

Byron is about to become an author! He is the co-author of a book entitled “For The Win”. He says business and basketball have a lot in common when it comes to things like leadership and preparation. I told him he needs to write another book too, about behind the scenes of the Laker organization. Recently he did some co-hosting with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols on her show The Jump. He’d like to do more of that in the future but he says he’s not ruling gout coaching if the right situation comes up with a quality team.
