When you’re the president’s daughter and your birthday is July 4, your special day competes with Independence Day for top billing. That’s the boat Malia Obama has found herself in for the last eight years, but her dad had a special surprise up his sleeve to ring in her 18th birthday. He shared a stage with Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monae, singing “Happy Birthday” for Malia’s eighth and final time in the White House.

“Because it’s a job of fathers to embarrass their daughters, I’ve got one last job,” said the commander-in-chief. “‘It just so happens we celebrate our country’s birthday on the same day as my oldest daughter’s birthday, so just a quick Happy Birthday for Malia.”
