Parlor Social Talks Influences, New Single “It’s Complicated” and More

Dessy Di Lauro is a singer-songwriter and self proclaimed neo-ragtime vocalist and performer. Ric’key Pageot is a composer, keyboardist and producer who has worked with Madonna, Jill Scott, Earth Wind and Fire and more.

Together they are Parlor Social and people are talking about this talented duo who have been holding court all month long in a residency at the Hotel Café in Hollywood. They are both from Canada and are Cirque Du Soleil alumni who bring to the stage all of their shared experience in a dazzling, energetic performance that you have to see to believe.

Dessy and Ric’key stopped by our studios as they prepare for their performance this Monday night.

You really have to see this group to understand how awesome they are. We talked about the story behind the name “Parlor Social”. They were heavily influenced by the music of the Harlem Renaissance, when musicians would play for rent parties. Those parties were also called Parlor Socials. Ric’key and Dessy both share a love of the music of that era because of their parents, who exposed them to a wide range of music. They have combined those sounds with the contemporary hip hop, jazz and R&B of their own era to create a unique mix that has people talking.

Once I understood how they came to love the music of an era gone by, I wanted to know how they fell in love with each other. Ric’key and Dessy are both from Canada but it was really their love of music that brought them together. They met at a time when both were coming out of bad relationships and started writing together. They will celebrate their tenth anniversary in December. They were married in the Dominican Republic but hope to fulfill a life long dream of going to Cuba for the celebration this time around.

Another thing Dessy and Ric’key have in common is Cirque Du Soleil. A lot of what they do in their shows came from things they learned from the Cirque experience. In Delirium, Dessy played five different roles and learned to express herself freely and openly. The experience helped her to sharpen her theatrical skills. Musicians and singers were in the forefront in that show, so it turned out to be an amazing experience for both of them.

We talked about why there is so much great musical talent coming out of Canada these days. They believe it’s partially due to the fact that there are so many mixed races and ethnicities in Canada. Dessy is Afro-Brazilian, Cuban and Italian and Ric’key is of Haitian descent. They say that Montreal is even more multi-cultural than New York City and the music reflects it.

Parlor Social’s new single is called “It’s Complicated”. Ric’key says he’s been sitting on that beat for about two years and was considering giving it to another artist but he liked it so much, he decided to keep it for Parlor Social. They say the song is a great example of what they call Retro-Futurism. They were nice enough to give us the link to a free download for The WAVE family.

We talked a little about Ric’key’s very interesting career. He has written for Jill Scott and Earth, Wind and Fire and is currently touring keyboardist for Madonna. He was there when she famously fell from the stage and he shared the whole story with us.

You can see for yourself just how entertaining Parlor Social can be this Monday night at the Hotel Café. Hope to see you there!
