This Father’s Day, some local Dads are finally going to get the recognition they deserve at the 14th Annual HUF (Honoring Unsung Fathers) Awards and Scholarship Brunch at the Hilton Hotel in Long Beach. The event is the brainchild of TV Judge Mablean Efriam. During a conversation at the Wave studios, the Judge talked about the HUF awards and how they are shining a spotlight on some very special Dads.
Judge Mablean recently returned to the bench of her TV courtroom in the new daily series “Justice With Judge Mablean”. She says that her job is not only to entertain, but to educate, stimulate and advocate. She wants people to learn conflict resolution.
You can see by how Judge Mablean dispenses justice on her TV show that her real passion is people and families. That’s why she created the HUF Awards. She told us she recently came across photos from her first Father’s Day event which was held in her own backyard. It honored men in her family and in her life. She decided to take it to the community and today the luncheon serves to honor Fathers as much as we honor Mothers on Mother’s Day. The awardees are not entertainers or celebrity athletes; they are everyday fathers, many of whom have never been recognized in a public setting.
We talked about the magic of recognition and how important it is to acknowledge people for the good things they do. The Judge gives awards to fathers who are nominated by their families and other members of their communities. There are only two things they can’t do. They can’t be behind in child support or be involved in any incidents of domestic abuse.
We talked about the importance of highlighting men who do good things since we hear so much about deadbeat Dads and other negative images. In addition to honoring the Dads, the event raises funds for scholarships for gifted and talented high school students who have been accepted to college but can’t afford to pay.
The entertainment at the HUF Awards is always stellar. Popular saxophonist Mike Phillips, who played with Prince and Wayman Tisdale among others, is the musical director. Gospel great Dorinda Clark-Cole will perform as well, and comedian and reality TV star Kim Whitley hosts.
Finally I talked to the Judge about special memories of her own father. If you’re looking for a special way to celebrate Father’s Day this year, consider attending the HUF Awards and Brunch with Judge Mablean.
