On Tuesday May 17th at the Beverley Hilton, Darrell Miller, chair of the national Entertainment Department of the 750 attorney law firm Fox Rothschild LLP, will be honored by his peers with the Beverly Hills Bar Association’s entertainment Lawyer of the Year award.
Miller is also the author of an intriguing book entitled “The 16th Minute of Fame: An Insider’s Guide For maintaining Success Beyond 15 Minutes of Fame.” His client list is loaded with A-list talent and he’s got a lot to say about how to manage and grow a career beyond that initial success. We talked about the book , his upcoming honor and the path that has led him to the success he is experiencing today.
Darrell Miller is legal counsel for a lot of people whose names you know, like Angela Bassett, Courtney Vance, Kim Fields, Brandy and Ludacris, to name a few. He is uniquely qualified for the job, not just because of his legal expertise. You see Darrell Miller was a performer himself, traveling the world doing musical theater before attending law school. Today he is nationally recognized for his innovative strategies for effective brand building for his clients. It is for those successes that he is being honored on May 17th.
He started to build his client list with an old hometown friend. Actor Rocky Carroll, best known for his work on the popular sit-com Roc, is a childhood friend from Miller’s home of Cincinnati, Ohio. His next big client was Kim Fields, our beloved Tootie from Facts of Life. Darrell Miller believes that the foundation of his successful practice is relationships.
He was inspired to write “The 16th Minute of Fame” when he saw research on lottery winners that indicated that within two years of winning were broke again. The more they won, the worse off their post winning financial situations were. Miller wanted to know why. He says that most people are just not prepared for the success they seek. All they know is how to do what they’re good at, whether it’s sports, music or whatever. He says it’s not the 15th minute you need to worry about; it’s the 16th minute when you need to know what to do next to maintain your success. He wanted to inspire first generational wealth to think beyond the first incidence of success. Miller believes that a certain level of consciousness is necessary to prepare yourself. His book will help a lot too.
Darrell Miller is in the process of working on another book. The working title is The Value Proposition. I for one can’t wait to read it.
