WAVE Exclusive: Sheila E. Talks About Her Upcoming Album ‘ICON’

There’s nothing like hearing great new music for the first time. We had such an experience this week when we sat down with Sheila E. in her studio to listen to her upcoming new release. It’s called ICON and this new project is a musical love letter to everything that matters to Sheila- family, culture and the Bay Area sound.

There’s something for everyone on this record- hot Latin rhythms, tight horn sections, romantic ballads, danceable club music and old school funk. Sheila E. has also invited some special guests to the party including Prince, Ledisi, MC Lyte and of course Pops Escovedo. Even Mom Escovedo makes an appearance doing a brief yet sweet duet with her daughter.

Sheila shows her own considerable talents playing bass, guitar and her large array of percussion instruments. The album was recorded in Sheila’s beloved Oakland and mixed here in LA with help from her brother Peter Michael.

The video for the album’s first single is entitled “Mona Lisa” which you can see below. March 25th is the album’s street date and you can pre-order the album when you click here. In addition to the CD there will also be a vinyl version that contains 3 extra tracks. Don’t sleep on the vinyl.

While we were there, we also got a look at Sheila E.’s soon to be released autobiography “The Beat of My Own Drum”. It’s been a busy year for Sheila E, and it’s only March.
