On Friday December 13 of last year, Ricky Lawson took the stage at Spaghettini Grill and Lounge for what none of us knew would be the very last time. He was performing his Christmas show before an audience filled with friends, family and fans that night and after the show he was rushed to a local hospital when he complained of headaches and dizziness. He ended his stellar career with that performance on the Spghettini stage.
Ricky was one of the best known and best liked drummers in the LA music community. Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and other huge name stars featured Ricky on their records and concert tours and since Ricky loved to play he was often spotted in a variety of places sitting behind the drum kit doing his thing. Many of you might know him as drummer for DW3, our hometown heroes who launched their career at Spaghettini playing for the Sunday brunches and their regular Thursday night shows.
It made sense that Spaghettini was the scene of an amazing tribute to Ricky this past Monday night. Dave Koz, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Alex Ligertwood of the Santana Band, Evelyn Champagne King, Sheila E and Pete Escovedo were among the musicians who came to share their stories and to jam in memory of a man whose whole life was about loving and giving. Ricky’s family was there as well, with his brother and sister in law and his children, including his daughter, who sang beautifully in her father’s memory.
We love and miss you Ricky and we always will. RIP
