With Christmas just around the corner, many parents are on the hunt to snatch up that perfect toy for their children this year, and one local entrepreneur has the perfect toy this holiday season that any little girl would love.
Stacey McBride-Irby is the creator and designer of ‘Prettie Girls!’ dolls from her One World Doll Project, which strives to make a significant positive cultural impact in the doll category. Stacey joined Pat Prescott in studio to discuss the concept behind her multicultural line of dolls and what inspired her to launch her own business.
“As a little girl, I loved playing with dolls…but after I got old enough, too old to play with dolls actually, that’s when I realized my passion for fashion,” she explained.
After earning a degree in fashion, Stacey landed the dream job of working at Mattel as a Barbie clothing designer, which she credits to “being in the right place at the right time.”
While at Mattel, was inspired to launch a new line of dolls after noticing that her daughter didn’t play with dolls like she used to. That’s when she pitched the idea to create a line of African-American dolls to Mattel.
“Times are changing so maybe she wants something that she can relate to,” she said. “I want little girls who look my daughter to see themselves within dolls, so that’s when Mattel gave me the go ahead to do the ‘So In Style’ dolls.”
With the success of the So In Style dolls, Stacey decided to make the jump to start her own line of dolls called Prettie Girls! under her One World Doll Project. These dolls are diverse in culture, interests, attitude, style, and charisma, and provide young girls with a positive outlook on what the real-world standard of beauty looks like.
“I wanted to create dolls that were realistic,” she said. “They’re multicultural dolls.”
So far the reception of the dolls has been off the charts. Stacey tells us that “people are loving them so far because they’re relatable, little girls love them because they look like them and collectors love them because there’s a variety of dolls to choose from.”
Stacey’s next goal for her business is to get their name out in the toy world and start getting the dolls in stores. She’ll be taking her line to the New York Toy Fair this coming year to help get the buzz out, and is currently selling the dolls online at www.oneworlddolls.com.
