This Thursday night ( Oct. 24), The WAVE is pleased to present guitarist Norman Brown live at Morongo Casino Resort & Spa for a free performance just for our listeners.

In anticipation of the show, Norman joined Pat Prescott for a quick chat about what fans can expect at the show and current projects he’s working on.

With nine solo albums and three collaboration albums under his belt, Norman has plenty of music to draw from. So how does he choose what songs to include on show night?

“I try to think about what songs were played on the radio, I try to think about what songs work good live and what songs that…people tell me they want to hear, so I put my set list together based on that,” said Norman. “But it is difficult because there are so many songs to choose from now.”

One of those you can count on hearing Thursday night is his and Gerald Albright’s version of Ne-Yo’s “Champagne Life,” which can be heard in heavy rotation right here on The WAVE.

On how the two came about recording the song, Norman tells us that Gerald initially called him up with the idea, saying that he “came up with a great arrangement” and it took off from there. The song features Gerald’s daughter Selina on vocals and all the individual arrangements have certainly made it a party song he says people can “toast it up” to.

Of course fans will also hear some Norman Brown favorites including “West Coast Coolin’,” “Pop’s Cool Groove,” “Lydian” and many others. Norman tells us he tries to “tap into the energy” of his live shows and make it all about the fans.

On what has been the highlight of his over two decades in music, Norman says that it’s the opportunity to “connect with the people” that inspires him to keep recording.

“The people have really received this music well…and to get out there and start playing around the world – Japan, Africa, Europe, United States – and everyone was digging, so that’s be the most exciting part for me,” he said.

Because he’s so busy touring around the world, Norman decided to make a move to Texas recently. He, along with many other busy musicians, are tending to move out of Los Angeles due to the hectic lifestyle.

“We travel so much and it’s such a busy lifestyle, we get back home here in L.A. and it just seems like we’re still on the road almost,” he said. “I think we’re all searching for a quieter place to recuperate.”

He chose Texas because his daughter in the military is stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso and his son is attending school at the University of El Paso.

Though he’s out of L.A., there are plenty more opportunities to see Norman Brown as he finishes up his tour with BWB, Gerald Albright and solo performances like the one at Morongo. Visit www.normanbrown.com to see his complete list of tour dates.
