Last Friday night (Sept. 13), the men of BWB – Norman Brown, Kirk Whalum and Rick Braun – put on a killer show at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Summer Concert Series.
Before they took the stage Friday night, Rick joined Pat Prescott in studio last week to talk a little about the trio’s comeback tour, plus share some stories from his days touring with some of two of the biggest acts in music; Rod Stewart and Sade.
Take a listen to our extended interview with Rick in the segments below and hear his tales from the road when he went on tour with Rod Stewart and Sade!
Part one: Rick talks about touring with Rod Stewart.
“Rod Stewart is one of the great performers of all time,” said Rick. “What makes him a great performer, is he almost embraces the unexpected. He embraces moments that come into the show, whether it’s a woman storming the stage or someone climbing…”
Part two: Rick talks about how he got in connection with Sade and going on tour with her.
On getting the call to join Sade’s Love Deluxe Tour, Rick said that the band was “looking for a tall, singing trumpet player. You have to be tall, and you have to be able to sing, and if you can play trumpet, that’s good too…there was a height requirement.”
Part three: Rick tells a funny story about fake kickboxing with Sade during rehearsal.
“People don’t know this about [Sade] as elegantly as she comes off in public, she’s kind of a tomboy,” said Rick. “She decided at this rehearsal that we should fake some kickboxing….we were goofing around and laughing and having fun, and next thing you know, somehow my foot came up and she made a move and her foot connected with my foot and she fell down…but she was fine and we laughed.”
