For the first time in a decade, super jazz trio BWB is back together touring all summer long in support of its newest effort Human Nature – a tribute album in honor of Michael Jackson.
Of course, the ‘BWB’ stands for talented musicians, guitarist Norman Brown, saxophonist Kirk Whalum and trumpeter Rick Braun, who joined Pat Prescott in studio Wednesday morning to talk about the group’s upcoming performance at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach Summer Concert Series this Friday night.
Rick talked about why the three decided to get back together after ten years to record a follow-up album to their first collaborative effort, Groovin’, and what the recording process was like.
“We did this CD old school. We came together in Hollywood at Sunset Sound, and we brought the boys in from various places in the country…” said Rick. “I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed doing this project. It took ten years for us to get back together again, but here we are.”
The album pays tribute to the King of Pop’s classic hits spanning throughout his career from Jackson 5 to his solo releases like Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad. BWB brings its own twist on songs like “Man In The Mirror,” “Shake Your Body Down To The Ground” and of course “Human Nature” for a fresh sound on some fan favorites.
Rick also shared his memories with Pat about the time BWB came together in tragic times to be part of The WAVE of Peace benefit concert at the Forum after the September 11th attacks. Rick joined a slew of artists including Patti Austin, James Ingram and Stevie Wonder to help bring the community together with the power of music.
“Music is the universal language and it’s therapy for the soul,” he recounted. “I just remember everybody was absolutely in shock still from what happened, so it was a difficult time, but out of that came this camaraderie…it was such a spiritually uplifting day. We had a great time and the music was amazing.”
Join Rick, Norman and Kirk for a great night of music this Friday night at the Hyatt Summer Concert Series. For tickets and more information, visit www.hyattconcerts.com.
