Ah, summertime – a time to frolic on the beach, enjoy barbeques with the family and just bask in the warm, sunny rays by taking advantage of the extended daylight.
Today (June 20) happens to mark the official kick off to summer with the annual Summer Solstice taking place at 10:04 p.m. in Los Angeles, while in most of the world it still occurs on Friday, June 21st.
According to CBS LA, the summer solstice is the “moment when the Earth’s orbital motion points the Earth’s North Pole most closely in the direction of the Sun,” thus resulting in extended daylight. So to help ring in the summer solstice and the official start of the season, enjoy some of our favorite summer songs to get in the spirit!

Nat King Cole’s bouncy summer track just makes us want to skip down the beach boardwalk and grab an ice cream cone like a kid again!
“Hot Fun In The Summertime” — Sly And The Family Stone (1969): Summer is all about making lasting memories and each member of the group sings about what they love most about summer, concluding “That’s when I had most of my fun… those summer days.”
“Saturday In The Park” — Chicago (1972): This song pretty much just sums up how we want to spend every Saturday during the summer.
“Summertime” — Billy Stewart (1966): There’s no mistaking Billy Stewart’s bluesy scatting throughout this song full of jazz horns and funky guitar about the easy livin’ of summer!
