With a busy schedule jet-setting all over the world doing shows in support of his new record, More Than Words, former WAVE morning host Brian McKnight took some time out to join his old morning show co-star Pat Prescott to talk about his new album and upcoming performance at the San Diego Jazz Festival.
Having just released his latest album More Than Words in March, Brian tells us that his new songs are like a looking through a window to his soul.
“Each [song] when you write the amount of music that I write, it has to come from your soul, and these songs are my soul,” said Brian. “Pretty much, if you listen to this entire record from the beginning to the end, if you don’t know me you will by the time you finish.”
Brian tells us that he went a different musical direction on this album, straying away from the signature love ballads for a more up tempo sound, save for a lullaby dedicated to his daughters. He also notes that he used his personal life experiences as the source of inspiration for his lyrics.
“I didn’t know if I had anything more to say, and obviously based on the album’s title, I must have,” he said. “This is by far, to me, the record that’s the most like the real me than any other record that I’ve ever done.”
Fans will have a chance to hear some of these new songs live when Brian takes the stage on the final night of the San Diego Jazz Festival on May 26th.
One of the great things about a Brian McKnight concert is fans can always expect something different at every show. Mixed with all his career-defining hits like “Back At One” and new songs that are just waiting to become classics, Brian promises to put on a show that will please everyone.
“It’s hard because you want to play the new things, but people aren’t coming to hear those songs, they’re coming to hear the ones they love,” said Brian. “So I really don’t know yet…we’ll figure it out, but it’s going to be awesome!”
