One of the hottest records of the year hasn’t even been released, but already buzz is building over Dave Koz’s newest collaborative effort with fellow saxophonists Gerald Albright, Mindi Abair and Richard Elliot.
Known as the Summer Horns, this fierce sax foursome has come together for the first time to pay tribute to the past great horn bands of the ’60s and ’70s, and the hits that emerged from that era.
“I grew up on the horn bands – Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, Tower of Power – so I’ve always been transfixed from a sonic point of view on the sound of what happens in a horn section,” Dave said in an interview with The WAVE’s Pat Prescott. There’s never been, to my knowledge, an album that’s tipped their hats to the artists of that era of bands.”
Straying away from just producing a generic carbon copy of the originals, Dave notes that the Summer Horns record aimed to recreate famous hits with their own fresh arrangements of the song.
“Together, we sort of refashion some of the hits from that era from all those great bands and kind have done tributes, but not word for word. In other words we wanted to pay tribute to the songs and artists, but also put our unique spin on it,” said Dave.
Dave tells Pat that with each saxophonist’s distinctive sound and style, the collaboration produced something spectacular when the four hit the studio.
“Everybody has not only put their unique stamp on this project with their own style, but I think collectively we created a new style,” said Dave. “It’s full of life, full of energy and great songs.”
The record is expected for release this June, and just recently Dave has also announced a Dave Koz and Friends Summer Horns tour to support the release, which kicks off June 7th in Florida and includes a stop at the Hollywood Bowl on August, 18th.
“It’s a record that none of us would make on our own. It’s truly a collaboration…we’ve come together to really create something special,” said Dave.
