Coinciding with the start of Black History Month, the Lifetime original movie Betty & Coretta staring Mary J. Blige and Angela Bassett gets its big premiere on February 2.
Blige and Bassett, who play Dr. Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King respectively, depict the true story of the women behind the great Civil Rights leaders Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, and their journey of continuing the fight for peace after the tragic assassinations of their husbands.
In a new sneak preview and behind the scenes clip of the film, Blige and Bassett talk about portraying these influential women on screen and what their story means to them.
“This film is about a friendship that arose out of tragic circumstances,” Bassett says in the clip. “Betty and Coretta for so long have been known as the wives of, when indeed they were women of strength in their own right.”
“Although they were fighting for peace in different way, they needed each other,” Blige adds. “I really believe that this story at its core is about women just being there for one another.”
