Daryl Hall Gets Us ‘Laughing Down Crying’

Singer/musician [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Daryl Hall[/lastfm] has avoided what many musicians can only hope in the high turn over days of the music industry by staying afloat in the sea of forgotten artists. With his ingenuity and savvy adaptability to new technology, Daryl has created a unique concept of highlighting not only his music, but the electric creativity that sparks when talented artists of all genres come together for a jam session on his web series Live From Daryl’s House.

With a growing fan base that helped launched his web series into broadcast on KTLA, LFDH showcases Daryl’s phenomenal talents as an artist while exposing his fans to new artists they might otherwise never hear of. His keen ear and curiosity of what’s up and coming in music helps keep his own music fresh, and with the recent release of his first new album, Laughing Down Crying, in years, Daryl proves he’s just as talented as ever!

Pat & Kim had the pleasure of speaking with Daryl to hear about all his new projects and concepts behind both his popular web series and his new album.

The first new music we’ve heard from Daryl Hall since his 2004 release Live In Philadelphia, Laughing Down Crying is a term he coined in reference to the state of the world and his own personal mentality.

“It describes not only my mental state, but the state of the world,” Daryl explains. “I think we’re up, down and all around and I think that’s really what I was trying to say. I sort of invented that phrase, but it describes that feeling of ‘where are we, what’s going on?'”

Now in his fourth year in his hugely popular web series-turned TV series Live From Daryl’s House welcomes fans and new and old acquaintances for an intimate performance that’s well, live from Daryl’s house.

He brings in old friends like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Smokey Robinson[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Todd Rundgren[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Rob Thomas[/lastfm] and his old partner John Oates to jam on covers of their popular hits, as well as new and interesting groups from various genres ranging from the dance duo [lastfm link_type=””]Chromeo[/lastfm], rock group [lastfm link_type=””]Train[/lastfm] and new rising soul singer [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mayor Hawthorne[/lastfm].

This has helped expose his music to a much wider and younger audience than ever and let fans be a ‘fly on the wall’ inside his home.

“I’ve been very fortunate that there’s something in my music that people just stick with and not only do they stick with it, but rediscover it if they’re young. I have a really young audience at this point as well as my what I call my veteran audience…I don’t know what it is,” said Daryl.
