Besides his stylish collection of hats, Tom Braxton is known for his exceptional saxophone skills and live performances on stage. Having gotten his big break playing with the Wayman Tisdale Band in 1992, Tom became his official sax player and eventual music director over the 15 years performing with him.

Tom opened up about his time playing with the beloved basketball great turned jazz guitarist Wayman Tisdale and how much fans loved he music and loving spirit.

“I think it’s how he made everybody. I mean he was an encouraging person, he loved people,” said Tom. “He’s just a larger than life person and he did everything with excellence, but the people were important to him. He loved making music for people and I think everyone caught on to the sincerity of that.”

Since his time playing with the Wayman Tisdale Band, Tom has recorded a number of solo albums, the latest being his 2009 release Endless Highway where he pays tribute to the memory of Wayman in “The Wayman Smile!”

Besides being an accomplished jazz musician, Tom is also a dedicated athlete and runner, which he says parallels the characteristics needed to be a musician.

“There’s a lot of discipline, there’s a lot of hard work, and there’s a big commitment to it,” says Tom. “It’s not easy to go out here and run and sweat in the heat, but you do it for an eventual goal, and the same goes for music.”

His dedication and discipline to his music is what molded him into such a respected artist that fans can’t get enough of.
