Listening to “Surprise, Surprise” is like going on a walk on a sunny day, reveling in how great of a day it is, and then noticing that there’s a dead dog on the side of the road. It sounds lighthearted until you actually listen close enough to hear what Dennen has to say. The thing is though, that his great pop melodies make it so that you’re singing along to his troubled thoughts.
