For those not familiar with her visually stunning film Daughters of the Dust, Julie Dash set out on her own to write, produce and direct her authentically African-American masterpiece about the Gullah people living off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia.
The film follows three generations of women living on these sea islands at the turn of the century and their journey of keeping their family traditions alive as they make their way to the mainland of America. The film has received critical praise for its stunning visuals and moving story that’s unlike any other film ever made in Hollywood.
“It was a film I knew I had to make myself,” Julie recalls as she put her crew together to start production on the independent film. “We said we’re going to do something that’s never been done. We’re going to make an authentic African-American film in terms of the look, the tone, the texture, the feel, the colors, everything — especially the casting.”
To celebrate her phenomenal feat of creating this inspirational and creative film, Julie will be speaking at a special 20th anniversary event tonight, Thursday, June 16th starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Directors Guild of America. Director/AASC Co-Chair Abdul Malik Abbott, will moderate the evening’s conversation, and you can RSVP for the event by calling (310) 289-2034.
