As one of the featured performers at the upcoming 2011 Mercedes-Benz WAVEFEST on May 7th, returning to the Greek Theatre will have sentimental value for singer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Roberta Flack[/lastfm], who originally debut one of her biggest hits at the outdoor venue.
In a conversation with Roberta, she revealed to Pat & Kim that her single “Killing Me Softly With His Song” was first debuted at the Greek with a little encouraging nudge from none other than [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm].
Then on tour with Marvin Gaye, Roberta remembers being encouraged by the Motown giant to perform her work-in-progress tune “Killing Me Softly” during the encore for the cheering fans. She had been working on the song and she never performed it in front of a live audience before, but Marvin told her to go for it anyways.
“I said well, I got this song I’ve been working on called ‘Killing Me Softly,’ and he said ‘do it, baby.’ And I did it and the audience went crazy, and he walked over to me and put his arm around me and said, ‘baby, don’t ever do that song again live until you record it,’” said Roberta.
